The photo gallery section is now open for submitting photos without any approval process. Your photos will instantly be available for viewing once you upload them.
The review process was a good idea, but there just isn't enough traffic here right now to keep it going. So I've opened the gallery to all members in the hope of creating a bit more activity and interest. It's not actually going to be un-moderated, the staff will still be keeping an eye on the gallery, but you no longer have to have 3 yes votes for your photos to show up in the gallery. All photos that were pending have been moved to the appropriate category.

The standard of pictures posted in the gallery now is pretty high. I hope people continue to take a critical look at their own work and edit down to the very best. Threads are great for 'look what I saw' and 'how do I do this?' but it would be nice for the gallery to stand a little higher.
Thanks for the effort, Bob.

Joe,
I totally agree with what you've just said. The gallery is intended to be a showplace for your best work. The photos submitted so far have all be quite nice, and I think that trend will continue. I do plan on keeping an eye on the gallery, and should the photo quality become an issue, I'll figure out some method of dealing with it, most likely via some private correspondence with the member in question. I really like the moderated concept, but at this time we just don't have the traffic to make it work. Possibly it would be something we could try again in the future. Right now, we really need something to keep this place active. We've got a devoted group of regulars who show up quite often. They look around, don't see anything new, and then wander off. But they keep coming back, which means there's potential here. All we need to do is get folks posting things.

I was trying to figure out what Chuck C's latest post was all about and visited the RP.net forums where quite a bit of the excitement there is trashing others photos. Maybe that's what the gallery needed was a "trash" the photo format. That would get everyone fired up!
![]() Personally, I'm sorry to see it didn't work out, but it was worth the try. Somehow I suspect people like the drama on RP.net more than they would like to admit.

Phew! I'm so glad about that Bob the workload was becoming quite unbearable
![]() Where is the drama on RP.net, I don't think I have ever seen a crossed word, but then I don't look at shite on there so I could be missing it, seems like a mutual love in fest most of the time. ![]() Silence and tumbleweeds is the new "What a piece of CRAP" thats a bit disingenuous of me actually, because there are some 'everyday' decent shots that don't get the comments they deserve, but the whole, 'nice shot' thing, which is sometimes all you can really say, is just so lame!

Actually, the workload was the problem... Not too much obviously, but not enough. Folks simply forgot the gallery was even there, and reviewers forgot to check the photos, and some of them never were quite sure how the whole thing was supposed work, since we'd only done a few photos. I still like the concept. If we had been getting a few photos a day then it would probably work. But for now, there's just not enough traffic. Speaking of traffic, that's also the idea behind opening up the gallery. By making it easier for folks to submit, hopefully that will encourage more submissions.

Otherwise, the mudslinging gets old pretty quickly, and when that happens I'm usually out the forum door. I appreciate the gallery here, but things have been really slow for me photographically speaking, and I'm content on keeping whatever mediocre output I can muster on my blog. I'm hoping a multi-day road trip this spring will get rejuvinate my batteries.

Besides, it's good for you blog... Post a few good shots here, make sure you've got a link to your blog in you signature, and folks will head over there to see the rest of you stuff. The same thing applies to the rest of you of course. This site may not have a huge amount of traffic, but it is very highly rated on Google. Right now, I just typed "Railroad Photography" and this page was the 11th site listed. (i.e. the 1st site on the 2nd page) I'm not talking about search for railroad photo essays, just the simple term "railroad photography" That's excellent page rank, and having your work shown here will get you some good exposure.

A few folks have posted new images to the gallery, thanks to those of you that have.
If you haven't submitted any photo yet, why not give it a try? I don't mind if you upload something that you've already posted on another site, I know it can be hard to come up with seperate photos for every site you frequent. I'd really like to get some more activity going in the gallery and on the site in general. Since the darkest part of winter is past, there should be more good days for railfan photography soon.
