Thread: Sierra Railroad Infrared

    Default Sierra Railroad Infrared

Here's an infrared from March of 2000 when I was visiting the Sierra Railroad. Their ex-Santa Fe GP7 was hauling back some loads from the Sierra Pacific mill as it passes through Warnerville, California. The last I heard, the Sierra's future is quite clouded. The mills at Standard and Chinese are due to be closed, leaving the line's only business as the dinner train.

Nice angle and composition. IR is really interesting. Is the digital 'IR' or real?

This would make a great two page spread in a mag or book.

I'm surprised that no one has commented on this.

Well, it was shot in 2000, and Sam's a die-hard film guy, so I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say film. I agree that it's nicely composed.

I've always been facinated by IR and what the film actually "sees." I assume it's seeing part of the visible spectrum, as well as some of the relfected IR off of the foliage. Sam?

He he. Yes this is Kodak High Speed Infrared. Kodak is famous for making that halo effect, and I will say its something you can't get with digital. Unless you do some serious alteration to your camera's sensor. I'm sure this film will go way of the dinosaurs at some point.
